Based upon a series of books, told from Hap's perspective. The film is a study of the friendship between a white labourer and draft evader and a gay black Vietnam War vet in 1980s East Texas. Hap and Leonard begin their search for the lost loot with new compatriots Howard, Chub and Paco.
