The film is set in 1976 at the fictional Red Crow Reserve, a Mi'kmaq Indian reserve. Aila (Kawennahere Devery Jacobs), a Mi'kmaq youth, loses her mother to suicide and her father Joseph (Glen Gould) to a prison term.
