Jade and the Pearlï¿½s genre and massive cast seem to indicate a Lunar New Year offering, but The Powers That Be apparently decided that mid-summer would also be a good time for a film with extended wackiness, unchecked acting and wall-to-wall cameo appearances. These types of movies are a staple of Hong Kong Cinema, so we probably should forgive the film because it belongs to a populist genre with a long, if not storied history.
